Camera lens problems are one of the most common issues photographers face — whether you own a DSLR, mirrorless, or a simple point-and-shoot. The good news? Most lens issues can be fixed at home without expensive repairs. This guide walks you through every major lens problem, its root cause, and the exact steps to fix it.
Lens Stuck / Won’t Extend Medium Fix
The camera powers on but the lens stops mid-extension, makes a grinding sound, or simply refuses to open. This is one of the most alarming lens problems — but it’s usually fixable.

- Sand, dust, or grit inside the lens barrel
- Camera dropped while lens was open
- Battery died mid-extension
- Worn lens motor gears
✅ How to Fix
- Tap gently on the lens barrel edge
- Use compressed air around the barrel
- Charge battery fully, then retry
- Try restarting the camera
- Power off the camera completely and remove the battery for 10 seconds.
- Reinsert the battery and power on — the lens motor may reset and extend normally.
- If stuck, hold the camera with lens facing down and gently tap the bottom of the camera on your palm while powering on.
- Use a can of compressed air to blow around the seam of the lens barrel. Rotate the lens barrel gently by hand while doing this.
- If none of the above works, take the camera to a service centre — the lens motor or gear may need replacement.
Blurry or Soft Focus Easy Fix
Your photos look blurry even though you’re sure the subject was in focus. This is extremely common and in most cases it’s a settings issue, not a broken lens.

Foggy / Condensation Inside Lens Medium Fix
You can see a milky haze or moisture droplets when you look through the lens. This happens most often when you bring a cold camera into a warm, humid room — like an air-conditioned office or car.

- Temperature change (cold → warm)
- Shooting in rain or high humidity
- Stored in a damp camera bag
- Old lens with deteriorating internal seals
✅ How to Fix
- Place camera in a sealed bag with silica gel packets
- Allow the camera to acclimatise slowly before use
- Store in a dry box or with desiccant
- Use a lens dehumidifier overnight
- Do not wipe the outside of the lens — the fog is inside.
- Place the camera and lens in a ziploc bag with 2–3 silica gel packets. Seal and leave for 4–8 hours.
- If fogging persists, leave the lens cap off and let it sit at room temperature for 24 hours.
- For fungus growth (which looks like spider-web marks), professional cleaning is required — do not attempt to open the lens yourself.
Autofocus Not Working Easy Fix
The camera hunts back and forth (focus hunting) without locking on, or autofocus is simply disabled. In most cases this is a settings problem, not a hardware fault.

- Too little contrast for AF to lock
- Scene too dark for AF sensor

- Power off, remove and reinsert the battery. Power on and check if the error clears.
- While the camera is starting, gently press the lens barrel inward while it tries to extend.
- Rotate the lens barrel gently (clockwise and counter-clockwise) while the camera powers on.
- Place the camera on a flat surface and power on — sometimes gravity helps the gears align.
- Try a fully charged battery — low power is a very common trigger for lens errors.
